It may surprise even those who follow San Antonio politics that the legendary Snake Pit Society still meets every Saturday at Mi Tierra over breakfast tacos, pots of coffee and a full agenda. The current average age of its members: about 75. At one time, the Snake Pit wielded power out in the open and shaped policy behind the scenes. They vetted political hopefuls and guided them through campaigns. They got things done in town, big and small.

They’re volunteers in other membership organizations, veteran groups and political causes. Two are Democratic National Convention delegates. One points at some nearby framed photos of Snake Pit gatherings and says, “They’re all gone.” But the work remains. And one rule stands — be respectful to one another, no matter what the point of view.
Kamala Harris, the answer standing in front of us the whole time Ralph Lopez, 88, a former Bexar County sheriff, the group’s ambassador, heads up the Snake Pit now. Among the others are Jose Antonio Contreras, a retired United Way executive; Larry Romo, a former director of the U.S. Selective Service; Arturo Ramirez Adan, a solar, wind and geo-energy consultant; and Ricardo Gonzalez, a former Alamo Colleges trustee.
