Plan a long-distance hike for the new year on footpaths that connect an entire archipelago
November 19, 2024 6:00 amThe 168-mile Stockholm Archipelago Trail , one of the world’s first footpaths to connect an entire archipelago, opened in October. It enables adventurers to access the paradisiacal islands south of’s capital like never before. Running from Arholma at the archipelago’s northern end to Öja in the south, the route will traverse 21 of the 30,000-odd islands, islets and skerries. Spring will be ideal for enjoying the islands.
Grinda is two hours by ferry from Stockholm. Grinda Värdshus, in the Art Noveau former residence of the first Nobel Foundation director, has doubles with breakfast from £154Sandhamn Sandhamn is the outer archipelago’s most developed island, with many hotels, restaurants and holiday homes clustered within its bustling port. Venture beyond, though, and serene landscapes await. There are dashing sandy beaches around Trouville in the south but the most alluring feature is the flat, sandy pine forest, on the paths of which port crowds seem far away.
Öja is 30 minutes by ferry from Ankarudden. Former boat pilot’s lookout tower has doubles for £176 including breakfast.Portugal is planning the world’s longest circular walking route. The first part of the 3,000km route was inaugurated in the town of Alenquer last July. The full trail is set to be completed by 2025.Cammino Retico, a 170km circular route, begins in Aune di Sovramonte, in the Vento region, and passes through 10 villages.
