The kidnapping is still considered one of the most brazen in British history, and triggered a national police operation
It was a case that gripped the nation and made headlines around the world when Abbie Humphries was snatched from the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham just three hours after she was born. For 17 agonising days, her parents Karen and Roger, from Burton Joyce, were left in the dark about their daughter's fate.
"My parents told me all about it as I grew up, but not all in one go," she added. "It came out in bits and pieces, part of the family conversation really." She added: "If she came back to me, I was determined to make it up to her with all the love that a mother could give." For her father, Mr Humphries, the recollection was even more harrowing. He recounted the heartbreak of being deceived into giving his newborn daughter to her kidnapper.
"When I returned, I looked around the room. 'Where's the baby? ' I asked Roger. He replied: 'Oh, a nurse came and took her for a hearing test'. I immediately realised something was wrong. In those days you didn't take newborns away from their mothers for a hearing test." Julie Kelly, who resided with her 25-year-old partner and his mother, was believed to be pregnant by neighbours due to her visible baby bump, and she had mentioned expecting a boy. However, she later declared the birth of a girl.
