Over the six weeks, we’ll spend £995 on Astrid and Xavi’s childcare combined. I'm devising new ways to keep working during the breakIf w=work, c=cost, s=sunshine and j=joy, what is the final phb ? This is the equation thatnationwide grapple with ahead of the summer holidays. I’ve spent hours trying to figure it out: there are so many variables, including three children with very different tastes.

I’m aware how lucky my family are; my working hours are very flexible and we live close to the beach and parks. I hope to spend as much time with the children as possible, fit in a trip to Dorset all together , while also keeping up three days a week of self-employed work.

There is some help available: for example, lots of employed parents don’t know they are entitled to up to 18 weeks unpaid parental leave for each child, up to their eighteenth birthday . There are also discounted – or free – holiday camp places for children on free school meals. Some are linked to schools, others run by Forest Schools and the Youth Hostels Association.
