The climate crisis poses far-reaching challenges to life on Earth—hotter temperatures, increased drought and wildfire risks, more extreme weather events like floods and hurricanes, rising sea levels, warming oceans, habitat loss, species extinctions, and myriad threats to our health and food chains.

AI is driving a massive technological, industrial and economic revolution that is transforming all aspects of our lives. Climate scientists also are using advanced AI models to tackle global warming, from optimizing energy usage to predicting extreme weather patterns to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

While seemingly tiny and inconsequential, the removal of a second will impact computing and communications systems and financial markets, which rely on precise timekeeping. Traditionally, timekeeping has been based on Earth's rotation, but since 1955, atomic clocks have provided greater accuracy and reliability. Still, UTC takes Earth's rotation into account, causing complications for time-dependent systems and networks as the rotation varies.
