Just yesterday, the Tasmanian government was sailing along relatively smoothly as the only remaining Liberal government in the country, but two bombshell resignations have changed all that, writes Adam Langenberg.

It's long been rumoured Ms Alexander, who was elected in Bass on a recount last February after the resignation of former minister Sarah Courtney, doesn't have much love for the stadium.

Ms Alexander has promised she will support the government's budgets and supply bills, and said she won't instigate motions of no confidence in government ministers, but has stopped short of saying she won't vote for them.Would that position hold if it's a motion of no confidence in a minister over the stadium, the very thing she's quit the Liberal Party to protest? Only time will tell.

She's stressed that she has no intention to disrupt the government, but Ms Alexander's decision could topple it. Probably only a resignation or two away from being promoted to the ministry, he's suddenly out on his own in the wilderness. And speaking of the wilderness, the internal division means fierce stadium opponents like Labor and the Greens will have their claws out, looking to kill both Mr Rockliff's pet project and, figuratively, the weakened premier.
