Glasgow-born producer Claire Mundell acquired the rights to the novel The Tattooist of Auschwitz in 2018. Now, the six-part Sky series is set to debut with an all-star cast including Harvey Keitel.

In 2018, Heather Morris took the reading world by storm with her debut novel telling the story of a love affair that survived the horrors of the Holocaust.Based on real-life events, the novel tells the story of Slovakian Jew Lale Sokolov who was imprisoned in Auschwitz-Birkenau in 1942 and the unlikely love that flourished when he met Gita while tattooing her prison number on her in the camp. Both survive and are reunited with each other.

Hollywood heavyweights like Harvey Keitel was cast as Lale, with Jonah Hauer-King playing the younger Lale. Melanie Lynskey plays the role of Heather Morris herself while Jonas Nay was cast as Stefan Baretzki. Polish-born actress Anna Próchniak was also cast as Gita. The score, meanwhile, has been composed by the legendary Hans Zimmer.

"We need stories that reflect back to us to positive sides of our own lives as to how they can overcome difficulties. Ultimately it’s a story of hope; that's what people are drawn to," she explained. "I felt huge responsibility to do justice to this subject matter and this terroriser and also to Lale’s family who are still alive," she said. "When you’re making something that’s based on a real person’s experience, the level of responsibility is huge. You need to be respectful and examine the nature of tone.

"To have Melanie to play Heather is incredible and she is so wonderful in the show, the real Heather was an ordinary person who took the time to listen to Lale and spend time with him. Melanie really captures that every woman quality that Heather has. The TV series also makes a key narrative difference in comparison to the novel by making Heather Morris a character — something that Claire says is critical to the show's structure.
