None of the governor’s priorities for the Commonwealth can be achieved by giving $181 annual tax relief to families.

On May 7, 2024, Pennsylvania’s Senate Republicans rushed through a $2.6B tax cut package in 27 hours. The proposal was introduced at about 3:30 p.m. Monday and was passed by the Senate 6 p.m. Tuesday. No hearings or real discussion of the legislation was held before final passage.

On one hand, the GOP’s legislation includes two primary tax cuts. First, a cut of the personal income tax rate from 3.07% to 2.8%. For a family earning $67,000 per year, the impact is estimated as a $181 per year income tax reduction – or less than $20 per month. Second, an elimination of the gross receipts tax on electricity bills. While that amount depends on an individual’s electricity bill, it comes out to about $5 per month for me.
