From planning reform to cleaning up Westminster sleaze, there are quick wins to be had

Labour doesn’t need to fully reverse the nation’s fortunes in five years to secure a second term finally wrestled power from the Conservatives, the victory was bittersweet. Despite a resounding landslide that saw more than 200 seats gained, the mood was less jubilant than cautious. The party’s vote share had barely improved; instead, it was the Tories, battered by 14 years in office, that haemorrhaged voter confidence amid collapsing public services and economic turmoil.

This is hardly news to any who paid attention. Throughout the campaign, Sir Keir vowed a “decade of national renewal,” predicated on two terms in office. Rishi Sunak’s downfall was in part due to his claim that his plan was working, and while the economy cautiously recovered, there was no visible impact on people’s lives. When he faced voters in July, he couldn’t point to any substantial progress, nor explain why he deserved their trust.
