The town has a Manchester postcode but a different dialling code
This might sound like a strange question to you but it is the exact debate users of the social media site Reddit have been thrashing out recently. Earlier this month, Reddit user Confident_Battle_415 posed the question on the r/Manchester subreddit asking - "Is Tyldesley classed as Manchester or Wigan?"
Adding: "I haven’t lived there for about 10 years now but one of my old friends and I were talking about it recently and the question got brought up again. Of course, it’s a Manchester postcode, but the dialling code is Wigan - so it’s all confusing. In 1947 two urns containing about 600 Roman bronze coins, minted between AD 259 and AD 273, were found near the route of the ancient road. Perhaps the two most famous people to hail from the town are Ella Toone, currently a striker at Manchester United Women FC, and the professional wrestler and actor Lord James Blears. Blears was a wrestling commentator on ESPN in the 1980s and also starred in episodes of Hawaii Five-O and Magnum, P.I. alongside moustachioed hunk Tom Selleck.
Replying to serenamanch65, Redditor Confident_Battle_415 posted: "If you go to Mosley Common which is also classed as Tyldesley, the dialling code changes from 01942 to 0161. It’s weird." Adding: "We ended up lumped into Wigan due to our proximity to Leigh, but we’re very much Manchester satellite towns. Myself and most of my neighbours work in Manchester, Salford or Trafford and if I’m 'going out into town' I’m going out in Manchester city centre."
