Blue plaque uveiled to Trafford son who shaped the district
He was way ahead of his time. He designed his own "prefab" house 20 years before they became an answer to a post Second World War housing crisis. He also installed "Welcome to Urmston" signs which had to be taken down as councillors feared they might be a distraction for drivers.
Mr Leeming was living at ‘Kelmscott’, Cornhill Road, Davyhulme, and designed the prefabricated house himself - 20 years before the ‘prefab’ was a familiar site in post-war Britain. The name Kelmscott references the house artist, poet, and textile designer William Morris lived in, someone who was a source of inspiration for Mr Leeming.
Mr Leeming was a particular fan of concrete and devoted parts of his book, ‘Road Engineering’, published in 1923, to the material. In 1922 he was appointed Engineer and Surveyor to the Barton-upon-Irwell District Council, a post he held until 1933. His there work centred on the reconstruction and widening of roads, housing schemes, Trafford Park main drainage scheme, and sewerage works extensions at Clifton and Flixton.
