A Salford high street is facing a new problem.

It’s become one of the go-to places in Salford to hangout. Monton Road’s mix of cool cafes and lively bars have made the area a destination in the city.

Tensions exploded at a public meeting at Salford council in December, when the Garden Bar and Restaurant on Monton Road was given permission to stay open until 2.30am on New Year's Eve, and asked to extend its opening hours each night until 1.30am. The Garden Bar dropped its request for a 1.30am closing time each night, but the issue sparked questions about what type of place Monton Road wants to be.

Andrea is a regular on Monton Road with her dog Betsy. She knows all the places which are happy for Betsy to go in, and those that are not. Chris says the area is a great place to live and change is to be expected as more people come to spend their money in the neighbourhood. Patrick Callaghan, 78, has lived in Monton since 2004 and said he doesn’t bother with the nightlife side of things in the area.He said: “The bad part of Monton is the cost of everything. I know a lot of businesses are struggling and they don't want to put their prices up, but it is happening.“I used to come here every day, now it's three or four times a week at most.

“We are committed to hearing our residents' concerns while supporting the thriving high street we all love.
