The Netflix documentary explores the famous Pepsi Points Case case with John Leonard...
Many might be wondering if it really is a true story, others might wish to know what the heck the whole thing is about. In short: yes, it really happened, and the four-part documentary recalls John Leonard's legal battle with the soft drinks company to get his hands on a military plane. You read that right.
Gen X and millennials will tell you all about the 'cola wars', which included the decade-spanning Pepsi taste challenge. But back in the '90s Pepsi launched one particular advertising campaign to rival Coca Cola – a loyalty scheme called Pepsi Stuff. It allowed consumers to collect Pepsi points, which they could then exchange for a series of prizes from hats to jackets to bikes. Points were racked up by, you guessed it, guzzling Pepsi and saving the labels. The more you drank, the better the rewards. The closing scene of the advert showed a man, complete with branded t-shirt, rocking up to school in a jet, along with the tag lines"Harrier fighter" and"7,000,000 Pepsi points".
While most presumed this to be a joke, a young man named John Leonard took them literally and sought to get his hands on exactly that number of points. When he tried to barter them for his very own jet, Pepsi refused, resulting in a court case which widely came to be known as the Pepsi Points Case.
After meeting a wealthy businessman named Todd Hoffman during a mountain climbing trip, the pair decided to send in a cheque for the seven million Pepsi points mentioned in the advert .
