The Republicans' deepest vulnerabilities were baked in all along
Vice President Kamala Harris is the ‘happy warrior’ the Democrats needed is a person of obvious talent. Her 2019 campaign should remind us there’s still plenty of scope for disaster – a bad interview performance, a crash-and-burn debate, a descent into organisational chaos – but for now, she has revived a party that, the latter an ironic nod at what’s become Harris’s signature line, delivered at a White House event last year: “You think you just fell out of a coconut tree?”.
Trump himself and the party he has brought to heel have proven utterly unable to adapt to an unexpected change in the narrative, and the extent to which they wereTrump himself is their number one vulnerability.

It spells out in black and white that Trump and his ilk are, in fact, as terrifying as gloomier Democrats have been warning since 2016. “When the Founders spoke of ‘pursuit of Happiness,’ what they meant might be understood today as in essence ‘pursuit of Blessedness’,” they write. “That is, an individual must be free to live as his Creator ordained – to flourish. Our Constitution grants each of us the liberty to do not what we want, but what we ought.”tell you you ought to is not, in fact, freedom – especially if you’re not a strictly conservative white Christian man. And a large majority of Americans are not.
