Wales has become the first part of the U.K. to get a Black leader, following the election of Vaughan Gething as first minister

Vaughan Gething poses for a photo, in a lecture hall at Cardiff University, after being elected as the next Welsh Labour leader and First Minister of Wales, in Cardiff, Saturday, March 16, 2024. Gething has won the Welsh Labour Party leadership contest and is set to become the first Black leader of Wales’ semi-autonomous government. Gething, who is currently Welsh economy minister, beat Education Minister Jeremy Miles in a race to replace First Minister Mark Drakeford.

Gething, the son of a Welsh father and a Zambian mother, said Wales is now “the first nation anywhere in Europe to be led by a Black person.” He said he wanted to lead a country that “can celebrate our differences and take pride in all of those things that draw us together."Three of the U.K.’s four governments now have nonwhite leaders. U.K. Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has Indian heritage, while Scottish First Minister Humza Yousaf was born to a Pakistani family in Britain.

Gething was Wales’ health minister during the COVID-19 pandemic. As economy minister since 2021, he has had to deal with fallout from Tata Steel’s plan to close both blast furnaces at its plant in Port Talbot, eliminating 2,800 jobs at one of Wales’ biggest employers.
