It's officially been named the longest high street in Great Britain, with more than 200 commercial premises lining its 1.85-mile stretchFor those in the latter camp, one particular coastal location in the UK lays claim to possessing the nation's longest high street, lined with hundreds of shops.
Rather, it developed organically over several decades as Southend evolved from a modest fishing hamlet into one of the country's most renowned seaside destinations. The road once constituted part of the former A13 route connecting London with the Essex coastline, and as the town flourished, residential properties along the way were progressively transformed into commercial establishments, reportsWhen estate agencies, garages, solicitors, medical practices and other enterprises are factored in, the total number of commercial units exceeds 200.
Various stretches of the thoroughfare have cultivated distinct identities. Certain parts boast major retail outlets and supermarkets, while others have become synonymous with independent traders, bakeries, florists, furniture retailers and shops selling international cuisine.
However, while London Road may claim the title, it's certainly not the sole draw for visitors to Southend. The city has seen significant redevelopment in recent times and continues to rank among the Essex coast's most sought-after destinations. Among its most celebrated landmarks is Southend Pier, extending 1.33 miles into the Thames Estuary and holding the distinction of being the world's longest pleasure pier.
Those visiting can journey to its furthest point via the pier railway while taking in panoramic views of the estuary. Close by sits Adventure Island, a well-loved theme park brimming with rides and entertainment for all the family. Southend also features approximately seven miles of shoreline. Three Shells Beach proves a hit with families, whereas Chalkwell Beach and Thorpe Bay provide a more tranquil alternative to the busier stretches of waterfront.
A brief journey from London Road's western terminus lies Old Leigh. This historic fishing settlement features cobbled lanes, traditional public houses and seafood vendors.
