One rosacea sufferer tells BritishVogue how she manages her beauty routine, from the key to applying foundation to why she made the transition to soft, calm and simple skincare.
I happily share pictures and videos of my rosacea with thousands of women on the internet. Someone has to take one for the team and do it, and I want more people to understand that their red skin isn’t abnormal. Thesuggests that one in 10 of us in the UK has rosacea. But the thought of showing mine to someone who I’m trying to impress causes me to have a total meltdown – it’s just never going to happen.
In short, rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that prompts my skin to redden – and hugely impacts the way that I see myself. From flushing to thread veins, visible blood vessels to rough patches of skin, it manifests itself differently depending on the person. Having always worked in make-up, I’m grateful for those products that help to cover it.
For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a rosy complexion. Even in secondary school, I wore significantly heavierthan my friends. But when I reached my late twenties, my consistently flushed skin began to appear textured and raised. I saw a dermatologist, who diagnosed me with two different types of rosacea, a hereditary condition for which there is no cure, and proceeded to overhaul my skincare routine as I knew it.
My devout relationship with rich oils and hot flannels had to come to an end. Instead, I began to adopt a simpler approach to skincare – no more cocktails of serums or sweet-smelling
