If this becomes a trend long term, it could dramatically transform the way we design our cities and envision our CBDs. Many things would need to be redesigned or would become obsolete. Road networks and public transport are designed around the hub and spoke of a wheel – with the CBD or other city centres being the hub.
It’s not all bad though. Professor John Nelson at the University of Sydney, a specialist in public transport and urban mobility, says a decline in the CBD’s importance for employment could be an opportunity to re-imagine it as a place for recreation and habitation.
