The prominent cocktail bar located in Downtown Los Angeles will have its final day on Wednesday, July 3.
After 15 influential years, The Varnish, a landmark in Los Angeles’ cocktail scene, is closing its doors. The bar will host its final evening on Wednesday, July 3. Announcing its closure on Instagram this past Tuesday, the renownedspeakeasy will bid farewell to its patrons.
In response to the Instagram announcement, loyal patrons expressed their heartfelt reactions to the closure. One user remarked, “Reading this felt like a Steinway piano crashed onto my heart. I had no idea there was even a remote possibility Varnish could or ever would, vanish. What is DTLA without her?”
Another user reflected on the bar’s legacy, commenting, “What an era. In the grand lore of Los Angeles drinking haunts, to be around at the same time as Varnish is a true gift. Long live Varnish!” In 2012, The Varnish received the Best American Cocktail Bar award from Tales of the Cocktail’s Spirited Awards. It also became a James Beard Award semifinalist for Outstanding Bar Program in 2017 and ranked 22nd on the World’s 50 Best Bars list in 2011.
