Most of the properties now have modern shop fronts but a few have retained their character
There's a clang of a bell as you step inside the tiny shop. There's no one behind the counter but within a few seconds shop owner Andrew Plumb appears.
The shop is one of the oldest in James Street, a row of terraced redbrick Victorian properties in Kimberley. Some of the traditional 1800s shop fronts still remain but they're few and far between, having been replaced by modern designs. Open six days a week, Monday to Saturday, the shop closes for lunch between 1-2pm except on Wednesdays, which is half-day closing while Andrew goes to the wholesalers. He says: "I sell hardware, houseware, polishes, all sorts of things like that. Tools and cleaning products and cooking things.
"It used to be a lot busier. A lot of shopping is done online now but things like key cutting you can't do that online. You're not going to send a key to a complete stranger giving your name and address," says 57-year-old Andrew. The Plumb family also have another shop across the road but it's now used to store pet food. The window has been turned into a display with a Victorian workman and boy, and a weekday clock reminding shoppers "Save time and shop at A. Plumb & Son."
Andrew recalls the days when the physiotherapist was a greengrocers, Ziggy's was a butchers and the hairdressers across the road was a bakery. "Butchers, bakers but I don't think there was a candlestick maker," he says.
