The village also has a strong link to Batman
Across Nottinghamshire there are a number of towns and villages which are regularly mispronounced, whether its Southwell near Newark or Rainworth near Mansfield. However, one location in particular that is commonly pronounced incorrectly by people who don't live there is Gotham.
It is understood that the village name may have helped inspire the fictional Gotham City, but the village has an interesting history of its own. For example, in the 13th century it is believed the locals in Gotham feigned madness in order to avoid a royal highway being built through the village.Manager Lucy Tatham, 50, has lived in the village since she was a child and she says it has "a really nice community feel".
The community rallied together when a major fire broke out at Gotham Memorial Hall in February 2023. The hall, which housed the village GP surgery, a dispensary and library, had been left unused whilst major repairs were carried out on the building. Ms Tatham adds: "There used to be four pubs and a British Legion and there used to be a lot more shops when I was little, so everything has reduced down, but we have the shop and it's not far to Clifton."
