★★★★ Abel Tesfaye has hinted at the end of The Weeknd, and this storming show is proof he’d be bowing out at his peak 🖋️ shaun_curran
In between is a runway that goes the full length of the pitch, where Tesfaye spends most of the gig. He’s joined by a troupe of dancers in white robes and veils whose slow, purposeful, choreographed movements – sometimes worshipping at the altar of the robot – add an effective contrast to Tesfaye’s showmanship.
Arriving onstage all in white, he spent the first half of the show in a silver mask à la rapper MF Doom – from this vantage point, he looked, and moved, not unlikeduring his diamond-encrusted facemask era. For all of his reputation – Tesfaye’s persona in The Weeknd is one of dark-hearted excess that explores the highs and lows of ego-driven sex, drugs and depravity – he plays a more traditional frontman than you might expect.
A breathless first hour, songs blending into each other like a DJ set, is stunning. The hits – “Can’t Feel My Face”, “Starboy”, the darkly atmospheric tension-release of “The Hills” – are met with rapture, while the brilliant Ye hook-up “Hurricane” is a mass singalong.
