Not all new Labour MPs appear cowed by their surroundings

Britain’s Chancellor of the Exchequer Rachel Reeves is a brutal wake-up call to the realities of life at Westminster and their place in the party’s pecking order.

“I’ve been talking to new colleagues this week, who are very quickly waking up to the fact that they campaigned on an election ticket to do their best by their constituents, and then they get here and find they have no say and no input into decision-making. They’re trying to alter something that’s been decided above their pay grade, and they can’t change it,” one Labour MP told. “This is a stark reminder that they are lobby-fodder.

“Liz told us ‘Remember, this isn’t the only difficult decision we are going to have to take’,” one new Labour MP who attended the meeting told. “Rachel was lobbied to introduce a taper so there isn’t a cliff-edge on pensioner payments falling off, but I don’t think she’ll change her mind.” Another Labour MP said they are “keeping my powder dry for the battle on child benefit” to try to force Reeves to lift the cap on how many children are eligible for welfare payments. “A lot of people are holding back on this rebellion on winter fuel and that’s in part to do with the demographics of different constituencies,” the MP said. “In my area there are lots of young families rather than pensioners.

. Some are talking up organising their freshman colleagues to vote as a slate to allow as many of them as possible to make it on to their chosen select committees, whose membership will be decided in the coming weeks. With myriad opportunities for grandstanding on television, the select committee route has become a viable second choice for ambitious backbenchers over the last decade if they can’t immediately secure a payroll position.
