Doug Cockle, the renowned voice of Geralt of Rivia, is back in the role for Netflix's animated film, 'The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep.' Cockle discusses his return to the character, the challenges of voicing a more vocal Geralt in animation, and the ease with which he slips back into the role.

Doug Cockle , the iconic voice of Geralt of Rivia in the Witcher video game series, is back in action as the beloved monster hunter. This time, he's lending his voice to Netflix 's animated feature film, The Witcher : Sirens of the Deep, which premiered today on the streaming platform.

Cockle spoke with me last week ahead of the premiere, and while he modestly downplayed any sense of returning as a legend, there's no denying that hearing his voice in a new project, alongside other live-action cast members like Joey Batey (Jaskier) and Anya Chalotra (Yennefer), feels like a momentous occasion. 'It's always lovely to step back into Geralt's shoes,' Cockle says, reflecting on various spinoffs (like Thronebreaker: The Witcher Tales) and smaller projects he's done as Geralt since the launch of The Witcher 3's final expansion, Blood and Wine, in 2016. 'I describe it as—no pun intended—but it is like slipping into a warm bath,' though I suspect he might have intentionally used that pun. 'This was a really nice project to be a part of because it was a little bit different,' Cockle said of returning to do an animated film. 'One of the challenges was that they wanted the anime Geralt to be more vocal, basically. So I had to take Geralt to some places vocally that I hadn't been asked to take him before. I remember at one point the vocal director saying 'can you just project that a little bit more?' and I said 'Geralt doesn't yell!'' Cockle laughed, reflecting on the challenge. 'I did my best Geralt yell and we'll let the audience decide.''The voice is a muscle so like any athlete who trains, and trains their muscle to do certain things spectacularly—not that I'm saying I'm spectacular—the voice is like that,' here Cockle seamlessly transitioned into Geralt's gravelly voice, '—so now Geralt really is just part of my voice and I just fall right into it. Sometimes while I'm washing the dishes.' He then proceeded to do an impression of Geralt saying, 'Oh man, I think I need to bleach this cup.' Cockle's experience with Geralt's voice is almost like speaking with an accent. The longer he talks about the character, the deeper his voice naturally becomes, eventually sounding almost like Geralt of Rivia himself. The Witcher: Sirens of the Deep premieres on Netflix today as a 90-minute animated film, a spinoff adventure featuring Geralt and Jaskier based on one of Andrzej Sapkowski's short stories.
