Lists of the rarest species are always subjective, as “rare” can be difficult to define.
Surprisingly, there are quite a few species that are only known from the holotype. However, there is an even rarer subset of species that fall within this category—those that are known from just a single individual and have never been seen in the wild. The department of Matagalpa in Nicaragua, where Dunn's earth snake was collected, is characterized by pine-oak forests and cloud forests in the higher elevations, intermixed with lower elevation drier habitats. Thus, it could be restricted to one of the montane forests in the region where other endemic species are known. Unfortunately, much of this area has been converted to farmland for agriculture and livestock.
