Period drama set in London during WWII, following Catrin Cole as she writes a propaganda movie and battles sexism in the film industry. Starring Gemma Arterton, Bill Nighy, Sam Claflin. Based on Lissa Evans' novel. Available on BBC iPlayer until 15 June.
Period drama fans looking to indulge in the perfect movie need to look no further. The historical movie, Their Finest, is set in London during the Second World War and sees former James Bond star Gemma Arterton transform into Catrin Cole, a writer who inadvertently wages a one-woman war against sexism in the British film industry.
It's 1940, and Catrin is hired to make a morale-boosting propaganda movie, set to star fading actor Ambrose Hilliard, played by Bill Nighy, despite his initial reluctance. Partnered with fellow screenwriter Buckley , the trio set out to make a film that would warm the nation's hearts and capture the American imagination.
Their Finest is based on Lissa Evans’ novel called Their Finest Hour and a Half, which is a romantic, witty, and yet moving portrayal of a young woman finding her way, and her voice, in the mayhem of war. Since its release seven years ago, Their Finest has received an impressive 90% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and a whole array of glittering reviews.
One fan referred to the movie "escapism", and added: "There's a sweet love story and some wonderful work by an array of British actors. My heavens, this is charming, rib-tickling escapism.
" A second explained: "It feels inappropriate to be moved by a film about propaganda during an era of 'alternative facts'. Yet I found my soul soothed by Their Finest.
" A third added: "A delight from start to finish, except for the part where the film rips your heart out. " Another viewer confessed: "Love this movie so much, I've watched it at least 4 times. Give me more.
" "Tremendous, witty, moving" simply wrote one viewer as another echoed the sentiment: "This is one of the most beautiful movies I've seen. Great story, great message!
" Who stars in Their Finest? Where can I watch Their Finest? Their Finest is currently available to watch on BBC iPlayer, but it won't be streaming for long. It'll be available to watch until Monday, 15 June, so fans need to be quick.
