Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants to ensure that Manchester United aren't left trailing their rivals in years to come
The leaky roof at Old Trafford has for so long been viewed as symptomatic of the decline that has been seen over the last decade or so under the ownership of the Glazer family at Manchester United.

The cost of such a build, with a 100,000-capacity project mooted, would sail past the £2bn mark and likely be more than double the cost of Spurs’ Tottenham Hotspur Stadium given that development was done at a time of lower interest rates and less pressing macroeconomic factors.
Looking for improvements this season or next on the pitch will take much of the focus from fans and onlookers, as it should, but what is being proposed is about restoring United to dominance for the longer term, and for a club that has lacked vision and strategy for more than a decade, that is hugely impactful.
Add to that the potential for achieving revenue growth via means that currently don’t exist, namely the ability to sell stadium naming rights on multi-year deals, which could deliver £300m-plus over the life of a deal, then it is a compelling argument that a new build is what is required.
