Jane Jones felt grief and loss when her son Zac was jailed. They've written a book about the experience to help other parents deal with having a child behind bars.
Ms Jones said the day her son was sentenced she was approached by a staff member in the courtroom who provided her with pamphlets, but given the crippling emotion of that day she lost contact with that person and did not hear from them again.
"Suddenly you can't call your child. You have to wait until they call you, but you don't even know that you have to be on a call list," she said.A standard phone call with an inmate costs $8 every 12 minutes. The ABC spoke with another family whose son is serving a seven-year sentence at Beechworth prison who said they also received no advice on how to engage with the prison system.
"Neighbours don't necessarily come over with a casserole and flowers, yet at the same time the absence can be felt with that intensity."Victorian prisons are solely funded to work with the inmate, meaning organisations such as VACRO help to fill the gap in support."In terms of the research, what we know is that stronger connections with family produce much better outcomes in terms of reintegration and lack of recidivism," she said.
Having served two-and-a-half years of his sentence Zac Jones is now on parole, and despite those tumultuous years he and his mother have never been closer.
