May encouraged Brexiter fever dreams and then fell victim to that which she had nurtured

May could have been straight with Leavers and Remainers, both within and outside of her party. She could have spoken the language of trade-offs and compromise. She could have genuinely pursued the middle ground. May engaged in this fairy story for as long as she could, but eventually something had to be written down. That was when the reality of trade-offs became clear, in the form of her so-called “” guarantee of no hard border between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland. It was a compromise, of sorts. But it was a compromise which was only necessary because of the hard lines she had herself created. It led to her fall from power.
