Education Secretary Nadhim Zahawi warned the country is facing the rise of the hard-right and hard-left.
delay would be a Tory ‘suicide note’ if the UK has to take part in the European elections next month.
MP Zahawi said an agreement needed to be found quickly to avoid a country that would become further divided if the UK remained in the EU during the European Parliament elections on May 23.He said: ‘It would be, I think, a suicide note of the Conservative Party if we had to fight the European elections.’
The comments come as Downing Street offered further talks with Labour this weekend but the opposition said May needed to come up with some ‘genuine changes’ first. ‘Our approach to these discussions with Labour is that we have no red lines, we will go into these talks with an open mind and discuss everything with them in a constructive fashion.’
Pressed on whether any agreement must have a second referendum attached to it, she told Today: ‘I think a People’s Vote has its difficulties. I think if we had that vote tomorrow, I believe Leave would win.’
