The intro to Better Call Saul season 3, episode 5, "Chicanery," summarizes Chuck McGill's downfall and exemplifies Jimmy’s brother’s biggest flaws.
Summary SCREENRANT VIDEO OF THE DAY SCROLL TO CONTINUE WITH CONTENT Chuck McGill's self-righteousness established him as Better Call Saul's primary antagonist during the initial seasons, but it was the first 10 minutes of season 3, episode 5, "Chicanery" that perfectly demonstrated Jimmy's brother's downfall. Chuck's unlikability as a person stems from his outright refusal to be vulnerable to the people he cares about out of fear of looking lesser in their eyes.
Chuck had the opportunity to show his wife how much she mattered to him by telling her about what was really going on. Because Chuck's ego could not stand the notion of Rebecca thinking less of him - something he admitted in "Chicanery" - he kept up the facade of being on higher ground while coming off as extremely rude. Chuck would have rather kept his pride than open up to the woman he wanted to spend the rest of his life with.
Even Howard Hamlin wasn't exempt from Chuck's ego. When Howard suggested Chuck retire from practicing law, Chuck struck back with a lawsuit against HHM. "You think I'm trouble now as your partner? Imagine me as your enemy" is among Chuck's best quotes in Better Call Saul. Howard then struck back by buying Chuck out, which Chuck didn't actually want. It was clear from Chuck's exit from HHM that when he thought he was better than everybody.
