The Eagles' 16-13 win over the Baltimore Ravens in the team's first preseason game helped a few players looking to make the team or solidify their position in important position battles.
Eagles linebacker Patrick Johnson celebrates his fumble recovery during the fourth quarter of Sunday's win against the Baltimore Ravens.
Preseason football may not hold much significance for television viewers, but for the 22 players on the field in the fourth quarter of Friday night’s preseason opener between the Eagles and the Baltimore Ravens, it was a matter of life and death. Each player was trying to prove they deserve a spot on the 53-man active roster when final cuts are made later this month.
Linebacker Patrick Johnson was in that situation. Heading into his fourth year with the team, Johnson aimed to keep his spot in the edge rusher rotation. He made a strong case by sacking Ravens quarterback Emory Jones, forcing a fumble, and recovering it. The play led to a 49-yard field goal, capping off a 16-13 win.
