Romany Wake and Shakira Robertson used to be next door neighbours. Now they're trying to support each other after both their mothers were killed tragically in separate incidents.
WARNING: This story contains graphic details of domestic violence that readers may find disturbing.These are the words Romany Wake was told on Christmas Day 2021, immediately after her father Darren Wake had stabbed her mother Rachel, his ex-wife, to death."Darren came out of the house with blood up his arms," Romany, 22, told 7.30.
Romany said the 26-year sentence, with a non-parole period of 17 years, was not enough, but it has given her the ability to move on with her life."I now never have to think about him again or deal with him again … my world is my own right now, and my life is my own," she said.Until recently, Romany and Shakira Robertson were strangers with much in common. They both live in Hobart, were born the same year and work in childcare.In 2020, the two women were neighbours.
"I'd woken up to a message from one of mum's friends, saying they'd read Tas Police and a woman had been hit by a vehicle," Shakira said.Jacqui's mother Leanne Walford rushed to her local police station. Along with that pressure, Shakira is trying to find a way to honour their mother and has resorted to online fundraising to try and find $8,000 for a headstone.
"One of the police officers looked at me and said, 'If you don't come with me now, your mum's gonna die.'
