SFMTA officials unanimously approved plan to improve traffic and pedestrian safety around the Muni station

The West Portal Muni station and its surrounding area will look much different this fall, with the San Francisco Muni cipal Transportation Agency set to implement numerous additional traffic restrictions and safety improvements.

The plan, which is set to be fully completed this fall, calls for the agency to install speed bumps, flashing lights at crosswalks, concrete islands, and raised elements at multiple intersections along Ulloa, Vicente and Wawona Streets. Lenox Way will become a one-way southbound street before the San Francisco Unified School District’s academic year begins Aug. 19, while West Portal Avenue will have left-turn restrictions and transit-only lanes.

SFMTA staff’s initial April proposal would have improved traffic safety by physically protecting the bus stop on the north side of Ulloa Street at Lenox Way. Only eastbound drivers on Ulloa Street at West Portal Avenue and northbound drivers on West Portal at Ulloa could’ve turned right, while all westbound traffic on Ulloa at West Portal would’ve been limited to transit and commercial vehicles.

Dylan Fabris, the community and policy manager at San Francisco Transit Riders, urged the board to approve the final recommendation. He also noted that it represented “a gutting of 70% of the proposed transit-only lanes and more than half of the proposed turn restrictions” from the initial version. He said that keeping those measures in place would have “reduced dangerous conflicts and sped up transit for riders across The City.
