Equal Space, a diverse co-working or 'shared space' built by two Newark besties, is getting a boost from podcasting giant Audible.
Citi Medina and Rafael "Ralphie" Roman in 2014 cofounded Equal Space, a co-working or "shared space" in Newark that caters to multicultural, women and LGBTQ+ founders. The company is now adding a second location, thanks to a recent series of grants.For years, Citi Medina and Rafael Roman dreamed of a place where people of all ethnicities, sexual orientations and gender identities, could feel safe and even empowered to “bring their full selves to work.
Think Pride flags on display, gender-inclusive restrooms, a lactation room for new moms, and shelves full of books by BIPOC and LGBTQ+ authors. Inside the colorful, 20,000-square-foot facility — that’s dubbed “the art and social justice campus” since most of its tenants work in those fields — there’s also a string of beautiful, full-wall murals by local Black and brown artists. And posters with positive affirmations like “I am enough” and “You are loved” can be found as décor throughout it.
