Dylan Hay, 30, broke into JD Sports in Motherwell and stole £2,000 worth of goods. He was followed by CCTV cameras as he fled the scene and caught by police.
A thief who broke into a sports shop was followed on CCTV as he made his way from the crime scene to a house in Motherwell . Dylan Hay had helped himself to £2,000 worth of training shoes and clothing, Hamilton Sheriff Court heard this week. Hay, 30, admitted breaking into JD Sports in Brandon Parade South on May 2 while on bail for another matter. John Coogan, prosecuting, said a guard became aware of someone in the shop shortly after 11pm and alerted the police.
Officers found a shutter at the back of the building had been pushed up. Mr Coogan said: 'CCTV operators were able to give police a live report as the accused made his way with items along West Hamilton Street. 'The cameras showed him walking towards a house in Watson Street. 'Police officers followed and found several trainers and a Scotland top along the way. 'The accused presented himself at a bedroom window of the Watson Street address.' Defence lawyer Diarmid Bruce said Hay, who admitted previous convictions, has suffered as a result of 'chronic substance misuse'. Mr Bruce added: 'This was not a sophisticated break-in. It was doomed to fail as he was caught on CCTV. 'Most, if not all, of the stolen items were recovered.' Sheriff Scott Pattison said it was a serious matter as Hay had been on bail for a similar crime. Hay was jailed for 14 months but this was backdated as he had been in custody in connection with the current case since May
