A thief who betrayed the trust of a kind pensioner to steal £350 has escaped jail after a court heard it was the same amount as the Labour government denied pensioners by stopping the winter fuel allowance.
The grandfather had reported the theft from his home in the remote coastal town of Millom, Cumbria, on Friday 18 October. But instead of jailing the heartless thief magistrates gave Pearson a 12-month community order with a six-month drug requirement and five rehabilitation activity requirement days.
Pearson told the victim that his family in the village had 'kicked him out' and said he didn't have any friends to stay with.He seemed 'very appreciative' but returned a few minutes later and said he would need £60 and Mr Raine duly gave him another £40, said Ms Fee.
