The CDC is reporting the third human case of bird flu reported in Michigan in conjunction with the nation-wide outbreak among dairy cattle.
CDC Principal Deputy Director Nirva Shah told reporters that the dairy worker was infected with the H5N1 virus from a different herd inupper respiratory symptoms, including a cough. This is different from the other two human cases in dairy workers since March, who reported symptoms of conjunctivitis, or pink eye. Both respiratory and eye-related symptoms are common to H5 influenzas, according to Shah.
Federal public health officials noted that, so far, there have been no genetic mutations in the virus to indicate that it will develop human-to-human spread, leaving cow-to-human spread the most critical threat. “Our guidance is not blind to these possibilities and some of these constraints,” said Shah, referencing PPE guidance updated in early May. “Indeed, it contains a discussion of how to balance the need to stay protected with the realities of wearing difficult PPE in summer, hot, heat conditions.”
