With spring training well underway, which fantasy baseball players are set to surprise us? Our experts identified players who are going to beat expectations — whether that’s a former star returning to form, or a rookie who’s ready to make the leap.
Charlie Morton is 42nd among starting pitchers in the fantasy rankings, a reflection of both age and his 4.34 ERA in 2022, his worst in a full season since 2015. But here’s what that doesn’t take into account: Morton entered last season far behind his normal preparation and fitness, after spending the winter rehabbing from a broken leg sustained in the 2021 World Series. He had a 5.67 ERA through 12 starts, as he worked to build strength and get sharp.
84 ERA, .191 opponents’ average and .605 opponents OPS over 14 starts from mid-June to Sept. 2, averaging more than six innings per start with 109 strikeouts and 26 walks in 85 2/3 innings. He faded in his final five starts, lasting more than 5 1/3 innings once. But Morton showed in that 2 1/2-month stretch what he can do when healthy and strong, and he still finished the season with 205 strikeouts in 172 innings.
