Bittar is an artist, writer and community organizer who lives in North Park. Unbeknownst to most, Arab heritage has a secret sauce for success. It’s based on the principle of addition and multiplication, not subtraction and division. While our modern world strives to be inclusive and diverse, Arab cultures have tested the 'sauce's' power for centuries.
The assisted-GPS in our cellphones was adapted by a team of software engineers led by Egyptian American Samir Soliman and Palestinian American Saed Younis at Qualcomm in San Diego. Even the waffle cone was invented by Syrian Americans during the 1904 World’s Fair. Loay Elbasyouni, a Palestinian born and raised in Gaza City designed NASA’s Mars Mission helicopter that flew and landed safely. Lebanese American journalist Helen Thomas made the phrase “Mr. President” ubiquitous.
