Adjani Salmon is the star and co-creator of this very funny British comedy.
The Black experience in the UK is one that historically we’ve been underexposed to on screens in these parts, though recently this trend has started to turn a little, with shows liketurning a spotlight on the stories of Black Britons, as distinct from the American perspective that can so easily come to dominate our views of racial issues.
Alexander Owen, Adjani Salmon and Toby Williams in the big-hearted comedy Dreaming Whilst Black, which Adjani co-created.The set-up: Kwabena is a dreamer. We see his dreams play out, but it’s not revealed that they are dreams until we cut back to reality.
Most of all Kwabena dreams of making it big in the film business. He’s got a movie script that he knows could be a smash, if only someone would give him a chance. But he’s hamstrung not only by the unwillingness of the moguls to cut a battler a break, but also by the fact that his stultifying job in recruitment prevents him from chasing his dream with anything like full commitment.
But Kwabena is beset by more than just frustrated dreams and the tedium of the office. He’s also subject on a daily basis to the thousand little pin-pricks of everyday racism, as the white people around him, sometimes well-meaning but always utterly clueless, assail him with patronising comments, offensive assumptions and idiotic questions.
