The Chinese-owned, Swedish-based brand’s first purpose-built EV is well-equipped, bright and cheerful inside and offers massive straight-line performance.

Volvo managed to sell 10,000 cars in Australia in a single year for the first time last year, but the local managing director, Stephen Connor, says that’s just the start.

Volvo calls the C40 its first purpose-built EV, though that’s slightly mischievous. While it is true there is no petrol equivalent of the C40, it is still based on the original petrol XC40, complete with redundant transmission tunnel running through the cabin and front-drive on the base model. The price is high for a relatively small car , though a software-controlled motor at each end gives a particularly sophisticated all-wheel-drive set-up with excellent grip and blistering straight-line performance.
