This England's Ophelia Lovibond defends the series being 'too soon' after the Covid crisis
, Carrie was something of an enigmatic figure within the government. What did you do to prepare for the role?
So I was quite careful of using... I didn't want to allow my opinions of anything to kind of get in the way of just portraying it as accurately as I could. My opinion was sort of irrelevant, really. So I think the fact that Michael [Winterbottom] wrote it as soon as he did was a good way of recording this gargantuan experience we were all sharing.It's like trying to write a diary entry a week later – you can't remember the specifics. So something like this is on such a grander scale, I personally think it's important to record things while they're still fresh in your memory.
We had finished shooting quite a way before some of those revelations came to light – things like the partygate fiasco, we were not aware of that. So that's why it's kind of absent from the show. There were no reshoots to accommodate things like that. It was sort of decided that the story we told was told with the facts that we had at the time.
I think I was there for about three or four months and realised I was actually doing it [acting]. I just thought, 'Oh, you are actually doing it. This is possible'. It was reassuring to think I wasn't completely delusional! [laughs] It was encouraging.I think it was actually things that happened off set. It was the discussions that myself and the other actresses – Jessica [Lowe, who plays Bambi] and Idara Victor [Tina].
