Readers discuss violent riots in Belfast , the cost of student loans and whether crime should be filmed As an Indian family who recently relocated to the UK after living in the Middle East for 20 years, we are utterly petrified by the escalating anti-immigrant riots in Belfast ( In two decades abroad, the worst we ever encountered was the occasional, isolated incident of personal racism.
We moved to the UK expecting a high quality of life and a peaceful environment. We understand that history shows anti-immigrant unrest is not unique to the UK and that this country has successfully healed from such divisions in the past.
However, what makes the current situation so terrifyingly different from history is the alarming growth of far-right ideology. Instead of letting communities heal, these groups are actively weaponising and igniting every sensitive issue to fuel the fire. We are now realising with horror that our safety can be instantly shattered by a single crime involving an immigrant –regardless of whether they entered the country legally or illegally.
We live in constant fear, terrified that at any moment, we will hear a crowd outside our door yelling, ‘Where are the migrants? ’ as happened in Belfast.
‘These yobs reduced a difficult situation down to one of, ‘We’re white, he’s black. Let’s get him and the rest of them who don’t look like us! ’’ I was appalled to see the disgusting actions of those yobs – many of whom look not much more than children – in Belfast on the news. It wouldn’t surprise me to learn they don’t know or even care where Somalia or Sudan are on the world map.
The man charged with the stabbing that prompted the rioters is from Sudan and initial reports said he was from Somalia. These yobs reduced a difficult situation down to one of, ‘We’re white, he’s black. Let’s get him and the rest of them who don’t look like us! ’ It’s as if finding anything to brighten their sad little lives for an evening will do, as they can’t think of anything more constructive to do with their time.
Do they know what their kids are looking at on social media? If there was ever an argument for restricting underage people access to this muck, this week’s actions would be it. If the authorities decide to use water cannon to disperse rioters in places like Belfast, why don’t they put a permanent, bright coloured dye in the water? This would ruin the designer clothes the rioters wear and make them easier to identify by the police for prosecution.
It was a woman who was filming it, given the voice on the video. What else was she meant to do? She can’t stop a bloke with a knife. She did the only thing she could do.
Also, filming and posting it online meant it couldn’t be just brushed away as we could see what happened. Lastly, filming these things can help identify individuals involved and provide evidence later on. Sometimes filming is the best option.

But it is in fact perfectly sensible that the police should be aware of those who are attempting to incite violence against Muslims at a time when a great number of people on social media are attempting to stir up hatred towards Muslims, not against other religions.
