Garfield Heights City Schools are investigating an assault involving a pre-school student.
GARFIELD HEIGHTS, Ohio - Cavontay James Jr., who has autism, attends William Foster Elementary in Garfield Heights.“It’s not okay for a teacher that specializes in special education children to put her hands forcefully on a non-verbal child, that can’t express or communicate how he’s feeling,” he said.His parents say he was having a meltdown that morning.
“The teacher thought it was appropriate to grab him forcefully by his arm, drag him across the room 12 feet, and shove him on the carpet as he was screaming at the top of his lungs,” said Cavontay. The boy’s parents say they didn’t find out the same day, and instead got a call from the principal on April 9.
“They should have called us immediately. I would have dropped everything I was doing to come and save my son,” said Cavontay. “They never took him to the nurse to be evaluated after he was drug on the carpet, and all they can do is apologize.”“The teacher, I feel like, should have allowed my son to calm down, get himself together,” said Alexsandra Figueroa.“It traumatized my baby, his own parents don’t disciple him at all...
“The Garfield Heights City Schools upholds safety and security as its most important priority and will tolerate nothing less than the highest standards of interaction between our employees and our students. Upon learning about, and verifying the incident, the GHCS immediately placed this individual on leave, and launched an investigation, which is currently in its final stages. The community can expect swift and appropriate consequences in matters where anyone’s safety is compromised.”St.
