Even when you have unmasked a pathological liar, he will not admit defeat immediately and might respond with a typical phrase.
We all resort to lying from time to time. Whether it’s a lie to protect yourself or someone else, some lies are more harmful than others. While lying about your arrival time, your interest in an activity, or what you really think of a friend’s outfit doesn’t undermine your morals and relationships with others, other lies have more dramatic consequences.
Recognising a pathological liar 'A pathological liar lies frequently and doesn’t care about the repercussions. They’ll lie to anyone, about anything, whether the lies are big or small, detailed or vague, orchestrated or spontaneous,' therapist Eric Patterson summarises for Choosing Therapy. 'A pathological liar may hide his behaviour behind a set of untruths and inaccuracies. They often mix falsehoods with the truth, which makes their statements difficult to discern,' explains the therapist. The typical response of the pathological liar Even when you've identified a pathological liar in your life, confronting them won't stop the lying. While you might expect them to express remorse, apologise, and promise not to do it again, the opposite is likely to happen.
In an Instagram post, therapist Alyssa Lia Mancao revealed one of the typical phrases of the pathological liar when they are unmasked: 'At this point, I don't think there is anything I can say that you will believe.'
