Meteorologist Craig “Ceecee” Croskery has spent the last two years identifying, verifying and logging buildings that he described as “almost impossible” for the average citizen to easily find, despite the fact that they are meant to be places of refuge in life-threatening severe weather events.
There is no place that offers guaranteed safety from a tornado, but where do you go when more secure places aren’t available? One meteorologist has created what could be a life-saving map to answer this question. When severe weather strikes, some people have just minutes to get to safety, but finding the nearest tornado shelter quickly can be difficult. One man took it upon himself to try and change that.
"It matters because oftentimes seconds count, and that extra time can help people get to safe shelter," AccuWeather Chief Meteorologist Jonathan Porter said. However, Croskery found many were difficult to locate and others that were listed as storm shelters weren't built to the Federal Emergency Management Agency code.
Mobile homes provide little to no shelter from tornadoes, so residents should have an emergency preparedness plan ready and research the closest community tornado shelter, experts say. "Thirteen minutes is the average lead time for a tornado. That's not a lot of time to get there, get in, get even out of bed in some cases," he said."And that can be something that emergency managers have to work on going forward."
This includes never seeking shelter under a bridge or overpass, which can amplify the speeds of the winds and offer little to no protection from flying debris.
