Move over, su filindeu (threads of God) - a new thinnest pasta has been created.
The pasta is so thin, it can’t be seen with a human eye Researchers have created the world’s thinnest spaghetti – measuring 200 times thinner than a human hair. Unfortunately for us pasta lovers, the creation isn’t intended to be food. Instead, the material composing the spaghetti – called nanofibers – could have a number of important medical uses. Uses for the nanofibers range from making bandages to help wounds heal to scaffolding for bone regeneration.
In their paper, the researchers describe the next thinnest known pasta, called su filindeu , made by hand by a pasta maker in Sardinia, Italy. Su filindeu is estimated to be about 400 microns wide – 1,000 times thicker than the new creation. The newly created nanopasta formed a mat of nanofibers about 2cm across, and so is visible, but each individual strand is too thin to be clearly captured by any form of visible light camera or microscope.
