It's an oasis of wild tranquillity amongst the urban landscape
This beautiful 'secret garden' is a lush, vibrant and calming oasis growing in the very heart of Waterloo. However, rather than guarding the secret, the volunteers who tend this garden want everyone to know about it.
This area of land has been part of Victoria Park since the official opening in 1902. Now known as the Waterloo Community Forest Garden, it is an initiative set up by local residents in an effort to make use of neglected local parkland on Somerville Road in L22. In 2011, the Friends of Victoria Park created a campaign and rallied around a petition which opposed further erosion of green spaces and supported a proposal to transfer the land into the hands of the local community who could bring a creative vision for how the land was to be used.
In the end an agreement was reached with the council and local residents which ensured the green space would be protected. Nowadays, things are much more settled and the volunteers tending the space are keen to get as many people involved as possible. The community group meets every Tuesday and Saturday at the garden and says its aim is to “create an educational nature space that can be accessed and maintained by all the local community.
“Families are delighted to know it’s all actually on their own doorstep and they end up making connections and bonds with their local community. It’s a space for families and individuals alike to find relaxation amongst the wilds.” Families can embrace the adventures of the wild and it's the perfect place for kids to go bug hunting, build dens, learn bush craft, practice basic gardening skills and pick up top tips from the many experienced vegetable growers within the community.
