Our nation’s veterans, in times of peace or war, not only deserve our thanks but also our commitment to never forget their service.
For one day each year – Veterans Day, Nov. 11 – we recognize the debt Americans owe to our military heroes and heroines of every generation. But of course, this debt is a year-round obligation and one we must acknowledge with respect and gratitude every day of the year.
We must also bear in mind that Veterans Day and our year-round respect for veterans go far beyond the high value we place on their military service and sacrifices. A great percentage of veterans who have returned to civilian life have entered or preparing for new careers of public service as first responders – police, firefighters, paramedics – or in critical healthcare fields such as nurses and medical technicians.
